4 Stars Nice Internet TV and media player solution
Have owned this for about a month and works just fine. It would be nice if it worked with Hulu and other internet TV or music sources without needing a computer. I have this connected to my router and a Seagate ext. drive for storing music and movies and it could not be more convenient and easy to use. For streaming real content like TV I use Play-on with multiple plugins running as a server on my laptop in the background wirelessly which then makes it convenient to watch and search for TV content using the WDTV live and remote. More or less for me this was to enable playback of stored content and watch internet TV without tethering my laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable. Worth the money.
4 Stars title searching, random playback
Couldn’t find a simple way to find the video title you are looking for inside the hard disk connected through the usb port.
We couldn’t either select a random playback for the video songs you stored (so that you could play them that way in a party!)Western Digital WDAVN00BN WD TV HD Media Player
2 Stars Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t
When I first got it I could play music and video vob files, but I soon noticed that it wouldn’t play a full vob file without stopping in the middle. Then it started stopping in the middle of playing mp3 files. Now it stopped recognizing the hard drive (2 different ones) altogether. Oh boy; now it failed completely.
Ok, now I got it to work again and it recognizes the hard drive. I reset it and rebooted it, pulled out the plug, waited a while, and now it works again. But how often I have people over and I want to play music and forget about it. But no; that’s when it get’s an attitude and needs babysitting. That’s when I have to fiddle with it, reboot it, play with the wires. Meanwhile the party is going on without me. Often I just give up and put on a regular CD. I bought it in January 2010.
5 Stars wd live media player
The western digital live media works just as advertised. I no longer need to convert to DVD format to play movies. I usually use an external hard drive but I also have the player attached to a network which also works great. I am very satisfied and should have purchased the player much sooner.
4 Stars Could have been better!
I already own the regular WD media player and a Kodak Home Theatre and I have been looking for another media player that I can use on my car. After a couple of years of looking it seems no one can make a media player that ace in every category.
Finally, I went with this player because I have been happy with WD product.
This product is no different. I’m happy with with so far. There are a few things that I think a firware update can probably fix.
Pros:
- It does what it advertised. It plays most popular format without a problem. While it states that it plays MKV format, I have yet to try it.
- It is quire speedy compare to the regular WD player.
- It seemlessly connect to YouTube. I have not try the other live media such as Flickr, Live365 or Pandora.
- The picture quality is excellent. You cannot ask for anything else for a $94 item that is as small as this.
- Connection over internet is easy.
- It was able to locate my wife’s laptop over the network. I haven’t tried connecting to it yet.
Cons:
- While it plays M4V format video (DVD rip from Handbrake), the player cannot pause, fast forward the files using this format.
- The interface for YouTube is horrible. While the videos play well, the search and the video list are not up to par. Everytime after a video is finished, the screen goes back to the top of the list instead of where you last left off.
- The remove is too small. You can easily lose it. If you lose it you have no way to control the player.
- Wish there are some video streaming over the internet.
WD needs to focus on the cons and really make this an excellent product. I noticed that WD is out of stock on this item. Only a handful sellers have this product available. Is WD coming out with another player?
